Two Education Providers Partner to Increase Access to Coding Curriculum

Financing October 2015 PREMIUM

Manchester, NH (October 28, 2015) — Two major players in education, Southern New Hampshire University and Flatiron School, have partnered to provide increased access to coding curriculum and the skills needed for jobs in high-demand industries.

The partnership will include three elements:

  • An expansion of Flatiron School’s recently launched remote learning platform, creating the first nation-wide online coding bootcamp.
  • A 3+1 program, available to SNHU students, consisting of a three-year academic program followed by six months of Flatiron School’s web development curriculum and a paid internship during the final semester before graduation.
  • An in-person coding bootcamp at the SNHU Nashua campus, situated in the tech belt of the Massachusetts and New Hampshire border.

SNHU and Flatiron School will also apply jointly to the recently announced Educational Quality through Innovative Partnerships (EQUIP) experimental sites, which will enable any potential student to access federal financial aid in order to pay for Flatiron School. SNHU will work with its accreditors and a quality assurance provider to ensure that Flatiron School can maintain its 99% job placement rate with average starting salaries of $74,000.

“Since opening our doors in 2012, Flatiron School has pursued the goal of preparing and placing people with no prior coding experience into jobs as programmers, and we’ve continuously explored ways to expand access to our curriculum without compromising our industry-leading results,” said Adam Enbar, president, Flatiron School. “SNHU's infrastructure, along with their commitment to quality and innovation, will allow us to accelerate that goal while maintaining an incredibly high bar for student success.”

Both organizations are deeply committed to providing the best educational opportunities for all students through a variety of pathways. Flatiron School offers immersive web and mobile development courses in-person at its New York City headquarters, remotely through Learn-Verified, and through programs specifically geared toward low-income, underserved New York City residents, as well as courses for high school students across the country. Southern New Hampshire University offers more than 200 undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs, available on campus and online or through College for America, a competency-based degree model.

“After meeting with the Flatiron team, the potential for a partnership was obvious. We both believe strongly in the power of education to transform lives,” said Paul LeBlanc, president, Southern New Hampshire University.  “Our mission is focused on the success of our students. By offering this opportunity, we can position our students for career opportunities and future growth and success in their selected fields.”

Planning for the online expansion will begin immediately, while the 3+1 program and coding bootcamp offered at SNHU’s Nashua campus will open Fall 2016. The organizations will submit letters of intent for the EQUIP experimental site by December 2015.
