UC Irvine receives record $40M gift for nursing school

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — The University of California, Irvine, will establish a nursing school after receiving a $40 million donation — the largest gift in the school's history.

Officials said Wednesday that the donation came from William Gross, co-founder of Pacific Investment Management Co., and his wife Sue.

The money will expand UC Irvine's nursing program into a full-fledged nursing school and help pay for a building to house it. The nursing school would be the fourth of its kind in the UC system.

The Grosses have supported numerous health care causes. In 2006 they made a $10 million gift to UC Irvine to create a stem cell research center.
