University of Akron president steps down after rough 2 years

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — University of Akron President Scott Scarborough is leaving that role after the board of trustees determined the school needs new leadership.

The university says the trustees and Scarborough agreed on him stepping down Tuesday. A statement from the board says its job is to ensure effective management of the university, and a change is needed.

Scarborough became Akron's president in July 2014 and had a rocky tenure, including criticism over cuts and a largely unsuccessful attempt to rebrand the school as "Ohio's Polytechnic University."

The school says until an interim president is named, those duties will fall to the chief academic officer, Interim Senior Vice President and Provost Rex Ramsier.

A statement from Scarborough says he was grateful for the chance to serve as president.
