University of Michigan transportation center plans on hold

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The University of Michigan is putting plans on hold for a $38.5 million transportation facility following opposition from those living near the site.

In a letter to residents on Saturday, The Ann Arbor News reports (http://bit.ly/1P7R2qc ) school President Mark Schlissel said the university should have been more thoughtful and responsive when considering the project that was proposed to be next to a residential area.

The university Board of Regents approved plans for the facility in April, and authorization was given in December to issue the project for bids. The facility would include dispatch offices, bus storage and parking areas. It would be a maintenance center for at least 1,000 vehicles.

Schlissel says the school plans to evaluate input received and further study the potential effects of the project on neighbors.
