W. Michigan University looks to bring programs to Florida
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Western Michigan University is moving forward with plans to bring some of its academic programs including aviation training to Florida.
The school's Board of Trustees approved a recommendation Tuesday to authorize the university to seek the Florida Department of Education's permission.
University spokeswoman Cheryl Roland tells the Battle Creek Enquirer (http://bcene.ws/1LhNlku ) that the Kalamazoo school is eyeing the Punta Gorda area. The school's College of Aviation is looking to build a hangar north of the Punta Gorda Airport and rent classroom space from Florida Southwestern State College.
College of Aviation Dean Dave Powell says he wants to have a presence in Florida, where the school could have an international private pilot training program.
The Western Michigan University Cooley Law School currently has a campus in Riverview, near Tampa.
