Four PhD Project Professors recognized by White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics

The PhD Project, an award-winning program to create diversity in management, is proud to announce that four PhD Project professors were recognized during the week of September 19-23, 2016, by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. They are, Dr. Rowena Ortiz-Walters, Dr. Rebecca Perren, Dr. Jose Rosa and Dr. Cinthia Satornino.

New Report Shows That While U.S. Latino Children ’s Prospects Have Improved, Inequities Remain

A study released today by NCLR (National Council of La Raza) and the Population Reference Bureau (PRB) highlights improvements over the last 15 years in Latino child well-being, as shown by key indicators such as high school graduation rates, juvenile incarceration, health coverage and teen pregnancy. However, the report also notes that there are still high rates of poverty, obesity and a lack of reading proficiency among Latino youth. The report, “Toward a More Equitable Future: The Trends and Challenges Facing America’s Latino Children,” provides an in-depth analysis using data from the Latino Kids Database Explorer, which offers quick and easy access to national and state-by-state statistics on 18.2 million Latino children—95 percent of whom are U.S. citizens.

Cal State Fullerton Effort Snags 'Examples of Excelencia' Award

Enhancing Postbaccalaureate Opportunities at Cal State Fullerton for Hispanic Students (EPOCHS) was honored Wednesday by Excelencia in Education!, a national initiative to identify and promote evidenced-based programs and departments effectively boosting Latino enrollment, performance and education. EPOCHS creates a community that provides support and guidance so that students — including those who are underrrepresented and disadvantaged — can see their educational goals succeed.

Big Red Soda and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) Announce the Big Red ¡Avance! Scholarship Program to Increase Educational Attainment within the U.S Hispanic Community

To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15), Big Red soda has partnered with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) to support students pursuing a higher education. Big Red will grant five $1,000 Big Red ¡Avance! scholarships to assist students with the cost of higher education. Scholarships will be awarded for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Excelencia in Education receives $1.5 million to promote Latino student achievement in higher education

Excelencia in Education today announced $1.5 million in grants from the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation and Lumina Foundation to expand strategies that accelerate Latino student success in higher education. Great Lakes and Lumina have each awarded Excelencia $750,000 to advance awareness and implementation of effective, evidence-based practices that increase Latino student success.

Spanish architect Carme Pinós awarded 2016 Rupp Prize

Carme Pinós, an award-winning architect and educator, is the 2016 recipient of the Berkeley-Rupp Architecture Professorship and Prize. Carme Pinós is known for designs ranging from cultural centers, educational institutions and public housing to office towers, urban landscapes and furniture design. Pinós leads the architectural firm Estudio Carme Pinós in Barcelona, Spain.

DCCCD student receives President’s Award for volunteer service

As Fabiola Chavez prepares to leave Eastfield College this summer, she will take with her the President’s Volunteer Service Award from President Barack Obama.Chavez, who is transferring to the University of Dallas this fall, has volunteered her time at Methodist Hospital since August 2015 in the clinical research department where she assists a clinical research scientist.

Richland College graduate wins award for entrepreneurship

For Richland College graduate Valery Perez, starting a business at age 14 was only the beginning of what she hopes will be a challenging but rewarding life as an entrepreneur. Perez, who is now 21, graduated from Richland in May. She is the CEO of Rosealloon, which makes and sells balloons that are stuffed with personalized gifts such as flowers, teddy bears or even engagement rings.

University of Idaho Eyes Partnering with Peru Potato Center

University of Idaho officials are negotiating a deal with the International Potato Center in Peru in hopes of getting access to the center's vast potato gene bank. Officials say the more than 4,000 potato varieties that include potatoes cultivated in the Andes thousands of years ago could help solve modern day problems such as late blight or a pest called potato cyst nematode.

Cal State LA Alumnus Jaime Escalante Honored with U.S. Postal Service Stamp

The U.S. Postal Service has honored distinguished Cal State LA alumnus Jaime Escalante with a Forever Stamp. Escalante, who taught calculus at Garfield High School and inspired students for 17 years, was immortalized in the critically acclaimed 1998 film Stand and Deliver. Escalante passed away in 2010 after battling cancer. He was 79.

AAA Member Carlos Velez-Ibanez Named Corresponding Member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences

The Academia Mexicana de Ciencias (AMC) is part of a network of international learned societies including, among others, the American National Academy of Sciences. The Corresponding Member title recognizes the career and work of foreign researchers who, in addition to having excelled in their field of work, have contributed significantly to the development of Mexican science.

American Geophysical Union honors Virginia Tech's Esteban Gazel with 2016 Hisashi Kuno Award

The Kuno Award was announced in conjunction with several other honors by the American Geophysical Union. The Kuno award is based on the excellence in research arising from work performed up to seven years past recipient’s earning of his or her doctoral degree. The award is named in honor of Hisashi Kuno, a mid-20th century volcanologist, petrologist and field geologist who revolutionized volcanology.
