Vicki Ruiz to receive National Humanities Medal from President Obama

Irvine, Calif. – Vicki Ruiz, Distinguished Professor of history and Chicano/Latino studies at the University of California, Irvine and president of the American Historical Association, has been named a recipient of the 2014 National Humanities Medal. The National Humanities Medal recognizes those who have deepened the country’s understanding of humanities and broadened citizens’ engagement with history, literature, languages, philosophy and other such disciplines.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, “a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) is defined as an institution of higher education that—(A) is an eligible institution; and (B) has an enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students that is at least 25 percent Hispanic students at the end of the award year immediately preceding the date of application.”
