Immigrants Sue US Over End To Temporary Protected Status [Beyond Education]

The Trump administration's decision to end a program that lets immigrants from four countries live and work legally in the U.S. was motivated by racism and leaves the immigrants' American born children with an "impossible choice," according to a federal lawsuit filed on Monday. Nine immigrants and five children filed the suit to reinstate temporary protected status for people from El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua and Sudan.

US Sends Warning Shot With California Immigration Lawsuit [Beyond Education]

The Trump administration's lawsuit challenging California's efforts to protect immigrants who are in the country illegally served as the latest warning shot at communities nationwide with so-called sanctuary policies. As he excoriated California officials for their policies and actions, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions warned against "rewarding" people who enter the country illegally.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is taking the fight over the nation's immigration policy directly to California by suing to block state laws that extend protections to people living in the U.S. illegally. He is expected to speak to law enforcement officials in the state's capital Wednesday, just hours after the U.S. Justice Department filed suit.

Judge Sides With Trump On Challenge To Mexico Border Wall [Beyond Education]

A judge who was taunted by Donald Trump during the presidential campaign sided with the president Tuesday on a challenge to building a border wall with Mexico, removing what could have been a major obstacle to the signature campaign pledge. U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel rejected arguments by the state of California and advocacy groups that the administration overreached by waiving laws requiring environmental and other reviews before construction can begin.

Judge Refuses To Step Aside In School Shooting Case [Education News]

A judge has refused to step aside from the case of Florida school shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz as requested by his lawyers. Court records show that Broward County Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer denied the request Monday. Cruz's lawyers claimed Scherer has made rulings and comments that indicate favoritism for prosecutors.

Lawsuit: Trump's Ending Immigrant Program Racially Motivated [Beyond Education]

Haitian and Salvadoran immigrants sued President Donald Trump on Thursday, arguing that the Republican administration's decision to end special protections shielding them from deportation was racially motivated. The lawsuit filed in federal court in Boston seeks to block the administration from terminating temporary protective status for thousands of immigrants from Haiti and El Salvador.
