Sometimes, however, we come across a story about someone who although not a part of the education field, is still a role model in the Hispanic community. Such was the case with the article “The Good Hands Of Ray Ramírez.” This piece first appeared at LaVidaBaseball.com. However, once we read about the life and impact of Mr. Ramírez, we knew his story and this article would be of interest to our readers and a worthy addition to our magazine.

Microaggression And Unconscious Bias by <b> Mary Ann Cooper </b>

Polite Terms That Excuse Blatant Unfairness Against People Of Color On Campus Stereotypes of minority students as “not belonging” to the larger higher education collective devalues their importance as part of the academic community and excludes them from advanced level courses. The lack of self-esteem that goes hand in hand with a perceived “second class citizen” status translates to lower grades, lack of discipline and academic apathy.

Chancellor Francisco C. Rodriguez Receives One Of Mexico’s Highest Honors

LOS ANGELES—Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) Chancellor Francisco C. Rodriguez, Ph.D., has received the Ohtli Award—or “Reconocimiento Ohtli”—from the Government of Mexico, one of the highest civilian honors it bestows, in recognition of his tireless advocacy of higher education to aid, empower or positively change the lives of tens of thousands of Mexican descendants or nationals in the United States.

San Antonio College President Assumes Presidency Of National Organization To Advance Latinx Leaders In Higher Education

Dr. Robert Vela, president of San Antonio College, recently began a two-year term as president of the National Community Colleges Hispanic Council (NCCHC), an affiliate council of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), that works to advance Latinx leaders in higher education. Dr. Vela assumes the role of president after previously serving two years as president-elect, two years as secretary and another two years as a board member.
