Financing April 2018 $15 Million Announced For Schools With Hurricane Evacuees Gov. Charlie Baker says that $15 million of state education funds will be available to school districts that enrolled students who evacuated Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands in the wake of devastating hurricanes there. Schools in Massachusetts have seen an influx of about 3,000 students following Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
Hispanic Community April 2018 Arizona Court Rejects Lower In-State Tuition For Immigrants [Education News] Arizona's three state universities and its largest community college district say they will raise tuition immediately for young immigrants granted deferred deportation status in the wake of a court ruling. The Arizona Supreme Court ruled that young immigrants in the program started by former President Barack Obama are not eligible for lower in-state college tuition.

The shock arrest Monday of Seuxis Hernandez played into fears that the former guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia haven't cut ties to the country's flourishing criminal underworld.
Hispanic Community April 2018 Some Guard Members Start Arriving At US-Mexico Border [Beyond Education] Some National Guard members have started arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border with more expected as federal government officials seek ways to curtail illegal immigration. The Republican governors of Texas, Arizona and New Mexico on Monday committed 1,600 Guard members to the border, giving President Donald Trump many of the troops he requested to fight what he's called a crisis of migrant crossings and crime.
Arts and Media April 2018 ‘Hamilton’ takes 7 prizes at UK stage Olivier Awards [Beyond Education] Historical hip-hop musical “Hamilton” took seven trophies including best new musical at British theater’s Olivier Awards, where women’s rights activists joined stage stars on the red carpet to support the Time’s Up movement. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical about U.S. founding father Alexander Hamilton was nominated in a record 13 categories at Britain’s equivalent of the Tony Awards. The show, which turns an early chapter of U.S. history into a compellingly modern story, opened in London in December after taking New York by storm.
Technology April 2018 Facebook users to learn if they were part of privacy scandal [Beyond Education] Get ready to find out if your Facebook data has been swept up in the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Starting Monday, the 87 million users who might have had their data shared with Cambridge Analytica will get a detailed message on their news feeds. Facebook says most of the affected users (more than 70 million) are in the U.S., though there are over a million each in the Philippines, Indonesia and the U.K.
