Arts and Media August 2016 Highlands University Gets Big Sheet Music Donation A sheet music donation to Highlands University is doubling the collection at its music program. The college announced this week that former professor Ron Thielman is giving the school $150,000 worth of sheet music from more than 3,000 scores. Thielman, who retired from New Mexico State University in 1995, says he donated his collection to Highlands because of his fond memories as the school's director of bands.

Hispanic Community August 2016 University of Idaho Eyes Partnering with Peru Potato Center University of Idaho officials are negotiating a deal with the International Potato Center in Peru in hopes of getting access to the center's vast potato gene bank. Officials say the more than 4,000 potato varieties that include potatoes cultivated in the Andes thousands of years ago could help solve modern day problems such as late blight or a pest called potato cyst nematode.
Financing August 2016 Top 10: Which colleges save the most with free textbooks? Rice University-based publisher OpenStax announced today the top 10 schools that have saved their students the most money through adoption of OpenStax free college textbooks in the 2015-16 academic school year. OpenStax textbooks have saved college students more than $68 million since 2012 and $42 million in the 2015-16 school year alone.
Global August 2016 Cornell University Restricts Water Use as Drought Deepens A severe drought in the Finger Lakes region has prompted Cornell University to restrict water use to ensure there's enough when students arrive in a few weeks. University officials say employees and students must decrease water use on campus by at least 30 percent. The city of Ithaca is also restricting water use, saying it could run out of water in 30 days.
