PITTSBURGH (AP) — Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh has been awarded $14 million in federal funding for the creation of a new National University Transportation Center.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/2gX70eS ) the federal Department of Transportation will be dispersed over a five-year period to establish a program known as Mobility21.

The program is a partnership between Carnegie Mellon's College of Engineering and the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy to develop innovations in smart transportation as well as smart city research and education.

Some of the work the program will focus on involves smart city technologies, connected and autonomous vehicles and multi-modal traveling, among others.
