PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Modest college scholarships are being offered to high school students thanks to the surprise discovery of a long dormant, nearly $2 million fund.

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza announced Friday that his administration was reviving the Edward Hinkling Bradford Scholarship.

The fund had been established in 1974 to help public school students pay for books, fees and other college expenses not typically covered by scholarships. Students who demonstrate financial need can qualify for a grant worth $750.

Elorza says the city will provide about $70,000 in scholarships annually, or about 90 individual scholarships.

The Providence Journal says little is known about the scholarship's founder but records show Bradford left $112,000 to the city. Four students received scholarships annually for a time, but the funds haven't been issued in about 10 years.
