Inside Telemundo Academy

Arts and Media November 2020
Featured Student: Edward R. Nunez

1. What attracted you to become part of Telemundo Academy?

The program was inaugurated the semester I took the course at Miami Dade College. For me, it was incredibly important to take the course and apply the skills I’ve learned throughout my college career. Ultimately, my project was selected, and my team was recognized for our achievement. Afterward, I was chosen for a position as an intern with the marketing team. I grew up watching Telemundo, so this was a special opportunity for me.

2. What is your ultimate career goal, and how do you think Telemundo Academy will help you reach that goal?

My ultimate career goal is to direct and produce content in partnership with great media companies such as NBCUniversal Telemundo. Telemundo Academy has given me valuable insight into the workings of a high-caliber media company and all the moving parts that come together to create and market content that is engaging our community.

3. Tell us a little about your family and upbringing, and what support do you draw from that experience?

I was raised by a Cuban and Venezuelan family as a first-generation American. My identity as a Hispanic American has evolved throughout my life, much like that of my generation. We relate to and watch content in both English and Spanish, or even a mix of the two. Growing up I was raised by a hard-working and loving mother and my community, both of which are positive examples of dedication and perseverance that I draw from when applying myself to my education, career or creative goals.

4. What has been the most challenging task you’ve had to complete as a Telemundo Academy student?

Managing a production group to imagine, plan, and produce an entire commercial project for the Latin American Music Awards was challenging because it was the first time that I was given the reigns of something that significant. At the same time, it was a challenge I was excited to face because I knew this was an opportunity to show what I could do.

5. What has most impressed you about the Telemundo Academy experience?

What impressed me the most was the eagerness of the Telemundo Academy mentors in leading and empowering students to perform at high levels. Another impressive aspect of Telemundo Academy is the determination of students within the course. This isn’t your average elective; this is an incredible opportunity, and the students treat it as such.

6. How can media change to be more inclusive and present a more accurate picture of the diversity of society?

Inclusivity starts at the planning table. Having the voices of creatives from different backgrounds telling their stories will yield a greater range of diversity on the screen and in our audience. I also believe it’s important to look at the body of work that represents our community, to identify ways to add to it that and dive into uncharted territory.
