Baltimore County, Md. (June, 2021) — Community College of Baltimore County is pleased to announce that Joaquín G. Martínez, Ph.D., provost and vice president of Instruction, has been appointed to the Commission on Student Success of the American Association of Community Colleges. He will serve a three-year term from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2024.

AACC continues to lead the way for institutions serving students who are undoubtedly among the finest and most resilient in the nation,” said Martínez. “I’m humbled and honored to serve alongside dedicated colleagues, who in turn, are tireless champions of student achievement and success at community colleges everywhere.”

The Commission on Student Success focuses on student access and success and organizational transformation. The commission may examine subject areas, including but not limited to, degree completion and two-year to four-year transfer. In addition, the commission focuses on initiatives that facilitate the implementation of the 21st-Century Initiative and Implementation Guidelines; showcase cutting-edge innovation with proven outcomes and improve student success; and provide affordable, high-quality technical assistance in areas that support student success.

Martínez joined CCBC’s leadership team in 2020. He oversees academic and student affairs for more than 50,000 students annually enrolled in the region’s most expansive selection of degree, certificate and workplace certification programs that prepare students for transfer, job entry and career advancement in a wide variety of industries. In his role as Chief Academic and Student Affairs officer, he is spearheading a college-wide Student Achievement and Success institutional redesign effort to integrate academic and student affairs more seamlessly and to streamline credit and continuing education programming throughout the academic continuum, with the overarching goal of significantly increasing student success while promoting equitable access to transformational academic opportunities for all students.

Prior to joining CCBC, Martínez spent the last decade in significant leadership positions at Miami Dade College (MDC) in Florida, including as president of MDC’s Hialeah and Wolfson campuses and district vice provost with oversight for accreditation, assessment and evaluation, policy analysis, and institutional effectiveness across all eight campuses, with an annual enrollment topping more than 150,000 students.

Martínez earned his bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Modern Languages from Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont; his master’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Administration and Supervision at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida; and his doctorate in Higher Education Leadership and Research Methodology at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.
