At H.O. we congratulate new education leaders that have embarked on the challenging but very rewarding journey of education leadership.

 

Juan R. Guardia 

Texas A&M University-San Antonio has appointed Dr. Juan R. Guardia as the new vice president for Student Affairs. Guardia joins A&M-San Antonio from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, where he has served as the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students since 2016. Before his tenure at The University of Cincinnati, Guardia spent three years at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, where he chaired the strategic planning committee for the establishment of the University’s inaugural Division of Student Affairs. He earned his AA in Broadcasting at Miami Dade College, a BS in Communications, an MS in Higher Education from Florida State University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies at Iowa State University of Science and Technology. 

Jonathan (Jon) Alger

Jonathan (Jon) Alger has been named the 16th president of the American University and will join the AU community on July 1, 2024. Alger, who previously served as president of James Madison University (JMU) in Harrisonburg, Virginia, for 12 years, has more than 30 years of experience in higher education and is a nationally recognized scholar on higher education policy. Jon also served as senior vice president and general counsel at Rutgers University. He earned his B.A. with high honors and Phi Beta Kappa from Swarthmore College, majoring in political science with a public policy concentration and a minor in history, and his J.D. with honors from Harvard Law School. 

Francisco Solis, interim president 

Francisco Solis has been appointed San Antonio College’s interim president. Solis retired from SAC in May 2023, and served as interim president from June 2022 to January 2023. During a 23-year career at SAC, he served in a variety of teaching and leadership roles. Key positions included professor and coordinator in the mortuary science program, dean for Performance Excellence in the Division of College Services, and director of Learning Assessment and Review in the Department of Integrated Planning and Performance Excellence. He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin School of Law, St. Edward’s University, and San Antonio College.

John K. Pierre

John K. Pierre has been appointed chancellor of Southern University and A&M College. Since 1990, he has served in faculty and administrative roles at Southern University Law Center. In 2016, he was chosen to serve as the chancellor of the Law Center. In 2023, the Southern University System Board of Supervisors tapped Pierre as interim executive vice president for the Southern’s Baton Rouge campus. Pierre received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Southern University in 1980, a master’s degree in tax accounting from Texas Tech University in 1982, and a juris doctor degree from Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1985.
