The Secret of Social Media Impact on Job Search

Career Advice September 2020

The employment market has always been challenging, particularly today, when there are more training opportunities to enhance hard skills. So, a way to make a difference is by outstanding on one's soft skills. Potential employers screen candidates through resumes, interviews, and references, But, when they want to learn more about someone beyond a resume and a twenty-minute talk, social media comes to play, and what is published will impact hiring decisions.

What employers look for in your social media platforms

When an employer looks at your social media, in general, they are not looking for reasons not to hire you or make a background check. They expect to find some cues to get a better overview of your personality taken from your social media behavior and reputation. The more active you are, the more they will learn about you.

Facebook, Tweeter, and Linkedin are the leading social platforms recruiters look today. How you conduct yourself on those platforms will give them a glimpse of who you are and whether you are a fit for the position. Also, if they choose to take a look at your online presence, they will do it at any moment in the hiring process.

What to do with your social sites and use it to your benefit

  • It is a good idea to have separate accounts on different social networking sites. If that becomes too complicated, activate your privacy settings, keeping delicate issues about your family and friends away from public scrutiny. It does not mean to avoid any kind of personal life publications. Just build as a strong and clean image as you can.
  • Develop an online presence approach to add some points to your career search. Inappropriate images or comments will not give you extra points. However, your media strategy should go beyond erasing pictures and words. Keep in mind proper behavior, as mentioned above. Your strategy should be solid. Find a coach if it is necessary.
  • By large, it is essential to keep coherence with your credentials and experience.
  • Make sure that every piece of information you provide about yourself is consistent with the impression you want to make, and it will work to your advantage.
  • Potential employers also use their social media for job postings. So, you may find it interesting as an additional source for your search.
  • Remember to keep private things private.

Some basics to include in your social media to make it look professional

  • Choose an appropriate picture and customize your profile. Use a professional alias.
  • Avoid discriminatory posts and negative comments about people in general but particularly on current and former colleagues and workplace.
  • Mention and comment on affiliations, memberships, and volunteer work you do.
  • Stay active in the groups you belong to, giving your opinions, sharing publications, etc.
  • Share photos of conferences and other events you have attended. A simple picture is your showcase as a social person.
  • If you are presently employed, try not to post during workday hours.
  • Use proper grammar and punctuation.

Your virtual identity is not only virtual; it is real. Once your social media provides a clean and positive image and convincing information, your potential employer will get a clearer idea of who you are. And in that case, you will be a step ahead of being hired.
