Texas Rangers Draft Henry Ford College Baseball Player Kyle Roberts in 5th Round

The Texas Rangers drafted Henry Ford College (HFC) baseball player Kyle Roberts in the 5th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft. A left-handed pitcher for HFC, Roberts was the Rangers’ 159th overall pick. A 2014 alumnus of Allen Park High School, Roberts graduated with his associate degree in Business Administration last month from HFC. He was a member of the Hawks Academic Team for the winter 2016 semester.

LaGuardia Community College Awards Associate’s Degrees to More than 1,500 Graduates at 44th Commencement

More than 1,500 graduates celebrated earning their associate’s degrees at the 44th Commencement of LaGuardia Community College held earlier today. Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, a long-time champion for higher education, gave the keynote address. Queens Borough President Melinda Katz has been a dedicated advocate on behalf of LaGuardia Community College—having allocated $2.75 million to LaGuardia programs including the development of high-quality, customized technology-driven and entrepreneurial training center.

University of New Mexico Installs Car Charging Stations

The University of New Mexico has installed two charging stations on its main campus so student commuters can charge electric vehicles. The school announced last week a charging station was installed at the Cornell Parking Structure and another one of the Yale Parking Structure. Each charging station can connect to two vehicles at a time. Officials say charging stations software will track usage, the number of charges, and the amount of energy used per charge.

UCF Hosting Blood Drives in Wake of Orlando Shooting

The University of Central Florida will be hosting several on-campus blood drives this week following the mass shooting in Orlando. In a statement on the school’s website UFC’s president John C. Hitt said in a statement on the school’s website that encouraged participation at the blood drives and will be visiting the blood drive sites Monday to greet and thank donors along with student body president Chris Clemente, Vice President and Director of Athletics Danny White and UCF coaches and student athletes.

Study finds global legalization trial escalates elephant poaching

Two researchers who examined elephant poaching data and the ivory trade say policymakers who consider legalizing some illicit trade may be relying on a faulty theory that legalization makes black markets collapse. The admonition comes in a paper posted today by the National Bureau of Economic Research, Solomon Hsiang, a University of California, Berkeley, public policy professor and director of the campus’sGlobal Policy Lab, and Nitin Sekar, an ecologist at Princeton University.

CSUF Education Programs Sweep Accreditation Standards

Cal State Fullerton’s College of Education has received the highest possible rating for continued accreditation for all of its educator preparation programs from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). A joint accreditation team representing NCATE and CTC gave the college high marks across all of the standards that ensure educators are prepared for preschool through 12th-grade school settings.

Students Going To State Capital To Push For Gun Law Changes [Education News]

A hundred Stoneman Douglas High School students are busing 400 miles to Florida's capital Tuesday to urge lawmakers to act to prevent a repeat of the massacre that killed 17 students and faculty last week. The students plan to hold a rally Wednesday in hopes that it will put pressure on the state's Republican-controlled Legislature to consider a sweeping package of gun-control laws, something some GOP lawmakers said Monday they would consider.

A federal-University of New Hampshire program that provides scientific research to improve coastal and marine management is getting a $218,000 grant. The Sea Grant Program focuses its efforts in four areas: environmental literacy and workforce development; healthy coastal ecosystems; coastal communities and economies; and sustainable fisheries and aquaculture.

In an early-morning tweet Wednesday, Trump said “Our Border Laws are very weak” and said Democrats “stand in our way” of new laws. He added “We will be taking strong action today.”

Starting Monday, the 87 million users who might have had their data shared with Cambridge Analytica will get a detailed message on their news feeds. Facebook says most of the affected users (more than 70 million) are in the U.S., though there are over a million each in the Philippines, Indonesia and the U.K.

‘Hamilton’ takes 7 prizes at UK stage Olivier Awards [Beyond Education]

Historical hip-hop musical “Hamilton” took seven trophies including best new musical at British theater’s Olivier Awards, where women’s rights activists joined stage stars on the red carpet to support the Time’s Up movement. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical about U.S. founding father Alexander Hamilton was nominated in a record 13 categories at Britain’s equivalent of the Tony Awards. The show, which turns an early chapter of U.S. history into a compellingly modern story, opened in London in December after taking New York by storm.
