The University of Central Florida will be hosting several on-campus blood drives this week following the mass shooting in Orlando:

• Monday, June 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in front of the Student Union and also at Bright House Networks Stadium
   
• Tuesday, June 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. next to the Veterans Commemorative Site on Memory Mall (Student Union side)
   
• Wednesday, June 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front of the Student Union and next to the Veterans Commemorative Site on Memory Mall (Student Union side)
   
• Thursday, June 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. next to the Veterans Commemorative Site on Memory Mall (Student Union side)

In a statement on the school’s website UFC’s president John C. Hitt said in a statement on the school’s website that encouraged participation at the blood drives and will be visiting the blood drive sites Monday to greet and thank donors along with student body president Chris Clemente, Vice President and Director of Athletics Danny White and UCF coaches and student athletes.  

“Earlier today [June 12], I extended to Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer all of the university’s resources to help our community,” Hitt said in his statement.  He also stated “We are working with law enforcement to determine whether the attack killed or injured UCF students, faculty, staff, and alumni. When we have more information, we will share it with you.”

American-born Omar Mateen entered the Pulse club, a gay nightclub, around 2 a.m. on June 12 armed with a pistol and an assault rifle and opened fire, killing 49 and wounding at least 53.  Possible ISIS connections are currently being investigated; Mateen called 911 during the attack and pledged allegiance to the terrorist organization.  Mateen was killed during a gun battle with the police.  This is the worst terror attack in the United States since 9/11 as well as the deadliest mass shooting.

“In time, I expect we all will know someone affected. A friend. A sister. A partner. A co-worker,” Hitt said in his statement. “To the victims of this attack — and their loved ones and friends — I offer the sincere prayers and hopes of the entire UCF family.”
