National Science Foundation Awards $1M To University For Student Scholarships And Research Experience [Education News]

The National Science Foundation has awarded a five-year, $1 million grant to a southwest Ohio university for student scholarships and research experience. Wright State University says the grant that runs through February 2020 will fund scholarships, research and other activities for the Applying Scientific Knowledge program. The program at Wright State was started in 2016 with around 10 students.

Tornado Damage Closes Alabama University Until Early April [Education News]

The Jacksonville State University president says the school will be closed until April 2 as officials assess the damage of Monday's tornado. Standing in front of a roofless freshman dorm at a Wednesday news conference and surrounded by downed trees and power lines, university president John Beehler said the school will come back "stronger than we were before, more beautiful than we were before."

Troopers To Patrol At Florida School Where Massacre Happened [Education News]

Already heightened security was being bolstered Thursday at the Florida high school that became the scene of a massacre last month, with Gov. Rick Scott ordering eight highway patrol troopers to help secure the grounds. The move came after the shooting suspect's brother was arrested on campus, two students were caught carrying knives and another made online threats.

Northwestern Joins Big Ten Universities To Launch Joint Cybersecurity Operations Center

Indiana University (IU), Northwestern University, Purdue University, Rutgers University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln announced the launch and activation of OmniSOC, a specialized, sector-based cyber Security Operations Center (SOC) that provides trusted, rapid, actionable cyber intelligence to its members. The OmniSOC is designed to reduce the time from first awareness of a cybersecurity threat anywhere to mitigation everywhere for members.

Maryland School Shooting Victim Has Died [Education News]

A teenage girl who was shot when a classmate opened fire inside their Maryland high school has died, authorities said Friday. The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office said Jaelynn Willey died at 11:34 p.m. Thursday. Earlier that night, her family said she would be taken off life support at the University of Maryland Prince George's Hospital Center.

Trump Signs $1.3 Trillion Budget After Threatening Veto [Beyond Education]

President Donald Trump signed a $1.3 trillion spending measure Friday, just hours after declaring he was considering a veto. Trump said he was "very disappointed" in the package, in part because it did not fully fund his plans for a border wall with Mexico and did not address some 700,000 "Dreamer" immigrants who are now protected from deportation under a program that he has moved to eliminate.

Tuition Hike, Pay Raises On Tap For University Of New Mexico [Education News]

Regent at New Mexico's flagship university have approved a tuition hike and pay raises for faculty and staff. University of New Mexico regents voted following a budget summit Thursday to increase tuition by 2.5 percent. Students will pay $7 more per credit hour for upper-division and some graduate courses, and fees will increase 2.39 percent.

Pace University Expands On Work With New York City Department Of Education And The Billion Oyster Project [On A Positive Note Beyond Education]

New York City public school students from underrepresented communities will benefit from enhanced STEM education programs thanks to the latest grant of $2 million from the National Science Foundation to Pace University. The grant will expand the Billion Oyster Project of the New York Harbor School to include K-12 science programs with the New York City Department of Education.

US Stocks Sharply Higher; Dow Up More Than 400 Points [Beyond Education]

U.S. stocks rose sharply in early trading Monday as the market made up some of its huge losses from last week. The broad gains sent the Dow Jones industrial average up more than 400 points after losing more than 1,400 last week. Investors drew encouragement from signs that the U.S. and China are open to negotiating to avert a potential trade war.
