Arizona Supreme Court To Hear Immigrant Tuition Case [Education News]

The Arizona Supreme Court will hear arguments in a case that will decide whether young immigrants granted deferred deportation status under a program started by former President Barack Obama are eligible for lower in-state college tuition. Monday's hearing will consider an effort by the Maricopa County Community Colleges District to overturn a June 2017 state Court of Appeals ruling that found young immigrants in the program aren't eligible.

Small Private Colleges Attracting Fewer Students [Education News]

Small, liberal arts college administrators are growing increasingly concerned as their enrollment numbers fall. The Boston Globe reports undergraduate enrollment trends at 118 four-year private colleges in the region show one out of five of those colleges have had an enrollment drop of at least 10 percent. Newbury College in Brookline is facing the most severe drop, with its enrollment declining 86 percent over 20 years.

Kansas University To Offer Tuition Help To Aspiring Pilots [On A Positive Note In Education]

Kansas State University has partnered with a regional airline to help students who want to be pilots with their tuition and job placement. The university's Polytechnic Campus in Salina has partnered with Piedmont Airlines and its cadet program, The Wichita Eagle reported. Piedmont's cadet program will provide the benefits to select students enrolled at the school's professional pilot program and who have their Certified Flight Instructor rating.

Trump Administration Seeks To Close Immigration 'Loopholes' [Beyond Education]

Trump administration officials said they're crafting a new legislative package aimed at closing immigration "loopholes" after the president called on Republican lawmakers to immediately pass a border bill using the "Nuclear Option if necessary" to muscle it through. The president has been tweeting about immigration and the border for the last few days, declaring protections for so-called Dreamer immigrants "dead."

Trump Wants Military To Secure Border With Mexico [Beyond Education]

President Donald Trump said Tuesday he wants to use the military to secure the U.S.-Mexico border until his promised border wall is built. Speaking at a lunch with Baltic leaders, Trump said he'd already discussed the idea with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis. "We are going to be guarding our border with the military," Trump said, calling the measure a "big step."

Trump says ‘strong action’ coming on immigration [Beyond Education]

President Donald Trump pledged “strong action today” on immigration, a day after he said he wants to use the military to secure the U.S.-Mexico border until his “big, beautiful wall” is erected. In an early-morning tweet Wednesday, Trump said “Our Border Laws are very weak” and said Democrats “stand in our way” of new laws. He added “We will be taking strong action today.”

Murphy Outlines $50M For Partially Free Community College [Education News]

Gov. Phil Murphy says he wants $50 million of his proposed budget to go toward making community college tuition-free for some families. Murphy outlined his proposal Thursday at Mercer County Community College in greater detail than his budget address last month. The Democratic governor says he wants an additional $5 million to go to the state's 19 community colleges to help deal with the potentially higher enrollments.
