In his first stint as president, Jose Fierro will be leading Cerritos College, a community college located in Norwalk, California near Long Beach, California. Fierro was named president this year. Previously Fierro served as chief academic officer at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyoming and was academic dean at Florida State University. Hence, he knows what issues community college students face and is tuned into what Latino undergraduates encounter in pursuit of higher education.

Summer Institute Cultivates Emerging Minority Business Leaders

Fifty-four Latino and African-American university sophomores and juniors gathered last summer at the University of California (UC) at Davis School of Management to become future leaders for MBA programs nationwide. They participated in University of California's Summer Institute for Emerging Managers and Leaders (SIEML), a program designed to help increase the number of minority students considering MBA programs. The UC Davis Graduate School of Management was home to the third year of this program, which was established by six University of California schools in 2012 to attract more minorities to master's programs in business.

Senate Moves Tax Cut Legislation to Brink of Final Passage -- Beyond Education

Jubilant Republicans pushed on early Wednesday to the verge of the most sweeping rewrite of the nation's tax laws in more than three decades, a deeply unpopular bill they insist Americans will learn to love when they see their paychecks in the new year. President Donald Trump cheered the lawmakers on, eager to claim his first major legislative victory. After midnight, the Senate narrowly passed the legislation on a party-line 51-48 vote. Protesters interrupted with chants of "kill the bill, don't kill us" and Vice President Mike Pence repeatedly called for order. Upon passage, Republicans cheered, with Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin among them.

Scam Spoofs Higher Education Institution’s Phone Number to Target Students

Campus police at a North Carolina university say a phone scam is spoofing the university's number to obtain money from students. The News & Observer reports that North Carolina State University police said on social media accounts Tuesday that individuals have spoofed the main university phone number to show up as the caller's number. Maj. Ian Kendrick says the callers have told students there's a problem with their status at the university and a fee is required to fix the problem.

University Announced $10M Gift to Be Used for Education Scholarship Programs Requiring Volunteerism

The University of Virginia at Wise is announcing a new $20 million endowment to help students pay for college. The Bristol Herald Courier reports that Charlottesville resident Hunter Smith gave $10 million to the school, a gift that was matched by the UVa.'s Bicentennial Fund. The money will be used for scholarship programs that will require students to volunteer 20 hours a week.
