Mexico Starts Giving Caravan Migrants Transit Visas [Beyond Education]

The Mexican government began handing out transit or humanitarian visas to people in a caravan of Central American migrants, and said the procession of 1,000 or so migrants that drew criticism from President Donald Trump had begun to disperse. Some migrants who awoke at the camp Wednesday said they would try their luck at requesting asylum in the United States, others in Mexico.

US Hiring Slows In March, But Job Market Still Looks Healthy [Beyond Education]

U.S. employers added a modest 103,000 jobs in March after several months of robust gains, though the government's overall jobs report Friday suggested that the labor market remains fundamentally healthy. The unemployment rate remained at 4.1 percent, a 17-year low, for a sixth straight month, the government said. Average hourly pay ticked up, climbing 2.7 percent compared with a year earlier.

Tuition Rates, Fees Approved For 2018-19 At ASU, UofA, NAU [Education News]

Most in-state undergraduate students attending Arizona's three public universities won't see tuition increases in the next school year. At their meeting Thursday in Tucson, the state Board of Regents approved 2018-19 tuition rates and fees for Arizona State University, the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University.

Puerto Rico To Close 283 Schools Amid Sharp Enrollment Drop [Education News]

Puerto Rico's Department of Education announced Thursday that it will close 283 schools this summer following a sharp drop in enrollment amid the island's long economic slump and the continued departure of families after Hurricane Maria. Education Secretary Julia Keleher said there would be no layoffs, with teachers and other employees being reassigned to other schools.

Ex-Student Donates $1M To Honor Oregon Music Professor [On A Positive Note In Education]

A former University of Oregon student has donated $1 million to establish a faculty chair in the name of a longtime music professor who died in 1988. The donation from Timothy Foo will receive an additional $1 million match from the Presidential Fund for Excellence, a fund established last year by UO president Michael Schill after receiving a $50 million gift from an anonymous donor.

Some Guard Members Start Arriving At US-Mexico Border [Beyond Education]

Some National Guard members have started arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border with more expected as federal government officials seek ways to curtail illegal immigration. The Republican governors of Texas, Arizona and New Mexico on Monday committed 1,600 Guard members to the border, giving President Donald Trump many of the troops he requested to fight what he's called a crisis of migrant crossings and crime.

Former Colombian Rebels Blame US For Leader's Arrest [Beyond Education]

Leaders of Colombia's disbanded FARC rebel army accused the U.S. on Tuesday of trapping a prominent rebel negotiator on a drug warrant in order to sabotage the country's already struggling peace process. The shock arrest Monday of Seuxis Hernandez played into fears that the former guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia haven't cut ties to the country's flourishing criminal underworld.

Arizona Court Rejects Lower In-State Tuition For Immigrants [Education News]

Arizona's three state universities and its largest community college district say they will raise tuition immediately for young immigrants granted deferred deportation status in the wake of a court ruling. The Arizona Supreme Court ruled that young immigrants in the program started by former President Barack Obama are not eligible for lower in-state college tuition.

$15 Million Announced For Schools With Hurricane Evacuees

Gov. Charlie Baker says that $15 million of state education funds will be available to school districts that enrolled students who evacuated Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands in the wake of devastating hurricanes there. Schools in Massachusetts have seen an influx of about 3,000 students following Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Tempe School District Receives $180,000 Grant To Bring Healthy School Meals To Students [On A Positive Note In Education]

Nearly 11,500 students in the Tempe Elementary School District will benefit from a recent $180,000 grant to help all students receive fresh, scratch-cooked, healthy meals at school by transforming school food operations in Tempe. The three-year grant, part of the School Food Support Initiative (SFSI), is funded by the Life Time Foundation and in partnership with the Chef Ann Foundation and Whole Kids Foundation.

Sessions To Address Immigration At Border Sheriffs Meeting [Beyond Education]

As thousands of National Guard troops deploy to the Mexico border, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions plans to bring his firm stance on immigration enforcement to New Mexico where a group of Southwest border sheriffs are meeting Wednesday. Sessions will speak in Las Cruces at the Texas Border Sheriff's Coalition Annual Spring Meeting with the Southwestern Border Sheriff's Coalition.

Ryan Bows Out: 'I Have Given This Job Everything I Have' [Beyond Education]

Claiming he's accomplished a "heckuva lot," House Speaker Paul Ryan announced Wednesday he will not run for re-election and will retire next year, injecting another layer of uncertainty as Republicans face worries over losing their majority in the fall. The Wisconsin Republican cast the decision to end his 20-year career as a personal one, saying he did not want his children growing up with a "weekend dad."

Data Shows Improvement By Hispanic, Black Students In Nevada [Education News]

National testing data shows that while Nevada students overall are still falling behind national averages in math and reading, there have been signs of improvement. The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress show that black and Hispanic students in the state have improved their average test scores.
