BOSTON (AP) — Gov. Charlie Baker says that $15 million of state education funds will be available to school districts that enrolled students who evacuated Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands in the wake of devastating hurricanes there.
Schools in Massachusetts have seen an influx of about 3,000 students following Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
The bulk of those students are concentrated in 12 school districts: Boston, Chicopee, Fall River, Fitchburg, Holyoke, Lawrence, Leominster, Lowell, New Bedford, Southbridge, Springfield and Worcester.
The Holyoke public school district has registered 238 students, with 172 still enrolled. Superintendent Steve Zrike said funds will be helpful since many classes have become overcrowded, and additional teachers and English as a Second Language services are needed.
Schools will receive the funds next week.
