Average In-State College Tuition Up 5 Percent In Virginia [Education News]

In-state tuition and mandatory fees at Virginia's universities and community colleges is up an average of 5.1 percent or $612 this school year. The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia's recent report to lawmakers found that students at four-year institutions will pay an average of $13,370 while community college students will pay an average of $4,620.

Judge Reaffirms Ruling That DACA Must Resume [Beyond Education]

A federal judge has reaffirmed his ruling that the Trump administration must resume a program that has shielded hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation. The ruling has no immediate effect because U.S. District Judge John D. Bates in Washington gave the administration 20 days to decide if it wants to appeal and ask that it be put on hold while trying to get it overturned.

$75M UNL College Of Engineering Renovations Approved [Education News]

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents has approved a more than $75 million renovation to the Lincoln campus' aging college of engineering buildings. The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the board approved the plan Friday. UNL will begin demolition of a 25,000-square-foot link connecting Nebraska Hall and the Scott Engineering Center next summer.

Stockton University To Consider Buying Former Casino [Education News]

Stockton University is eyeing a purchase of a now-shuttered casino in New Jersey. The Press of Atlantic City reports the university's board of trustees is meeting Wednesday to discuss buying the closed Atlantic Club Casino Hotel. The Atlantic Club is located near the university's Atlantic City campus, which is set to open this month.

Mississippi State Pledges Free Tuition For Guard Members

Mississippi State University is guaranteeing free tuition for Mississippi National Guard members studying full time for an undergraduate degree. University President Mark Keenum and National Guard commander Maj. Gen. Janson "Durr" Boyles signed the agreement Tuesday. University spokesman Sid Salter says Mississippi State receives $2,250 per guard member for tuition already.

New Scholarship Offered To Community College Students

A new scholarship is available to students enrolled in the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. A statement from the school system says the 15 to Finish scholarship will pay $500 to students who successfully complete 15 credit hours in a semester and sign up for 15 hours the following semester.

Colorado College Reprinting Up To 9.2K Diplomas To Fix Typo

A Colorado university is offering to reprint up to 9,200 diplomas after the outgoing editor of the school newspaper found a big typo. Alec Williams was checking to make sure his name was spelled correctly on his Colorado Mesa University diploma when he noticed it said "Coard of Trustees" instead of "Board of Trustees" in Old English font.

Update: University Board OK's Purchase Of Former Casino Near Campus

Stockton University's board of trustees has given approval for the purchase of a former casino site near a campus slated to open next month in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The university says the purchase agreement with Clearwater, Florida-based TJM Properties involves 11 upland lots totaling 9 acres (3.6 hectares), a beach lot that's 11 acres (4.5 hectares), a nine-level parking garage and a 23-story hotel tower.

U. Of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State Ban Medical Marijuana

For two schools in Oklahoma, marijuana remains banned on campus. This ban includes medical marijuana usage at both The University of Oklahoma (OU) and Oklahoma State University (OSU). The schools’ joint news release explains that they are legally required to comply with mandates from the Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act.

University Of Michigan Creates Computer Dwarfed By Grain Of Rice

A team of electrical and computer engineering professors at the University of Michigan have created a new device smaller than IBM’s 1-by-1 millimeter computer. The exact dimensions of the new device are 0.3 millimeters on each side, making it smaller than a grain of rice and comparable in size to a speck of dust.
