Struggling Long Island College Gets a Reprieve

A struggling liberal arts college on Long Island says it's staying open following negotiations with a London-based academic investment firm. Dowling College said Wednesday that its trustees had rescinded their motion to close the school after talks with Global University Systems. A spokesman said school officials expected a deal to be finalized soon. Dowling's president, Albert Inserra, scheduled a press conference on Thursday.

Plans Unveiled for New Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Education Center at LaGuardia Community College

At an event held earlier today at LaGuardia Community College, which was attended by Lloyd Blankfein, Michael Bloomberg, Warren Buffett, Jack Dorsey, and Michael Porter, plans were unveiled for the new Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Education Center located on the LaGuardia Community College campus. The event marked the 20th graduation of 10,000 Small Businesses in New York, a program created through a partnership between Goldman Sachs and LaGuardia Community College.

Students get a taste of working for Ocean Spray

Two DelVal food science students, Erin Nese ’18, of Roselle Park, New Jersey, and Melanie Mayhew ’18, of Bridgeton New Jersey,  took second place in Ocean Spray’s Student Product Development Competition during the spring 2016 semester. Ocean Spray was founded in 1930 and produces cranberry products that are sold by retailers all over the world. Students participants were challenged with coming up with a new cranberry product for consumers.

UPDATE: Presidential Primaries

Hillary Clinton won four of the six states from yesterday’s presidential primaries, including California. According to AP, Clinton now has a combined total of 2,755 pledged delegates and superdelegates.  Clinton’s opponent for the nomination, Bernie Sanders, has a combined total of 1,852 pledged delegates and superdelegates.  The next round of presidential primaries is scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C. on June 14.

UC Davis Student Takes Father’s Lessons to Heart, Named Top Graduate

University of California, Davis, student Lucydalila Cedillo grew up in East Los Angeles in a home without books, collected recyclable cans with her mother to help support the household and didn’t know anyone who had gone to college. But on morning rides to middle school, she took to heart what her father told her about the importance of learning.

Dr. José L. Cruz, Vice President for Academic Affairs at California State University, Is Appointed President of Lehman College

The Board of Trustees of The City University of New York today appointed Dr. José L. Cruz, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at California State University, Fullerton, and a frequent speaker and writer on higher education issues, as the third president of Herbert H. Lehman College in the Bronx. Chancellor James B. Milliken recommended Cruz's appointment following a nationwide search. The selection, approved unanimously by the Board's Executive Committee, is effective August 15, 2016.

Although the next round of presidential primaries is taking place today, some early reports have Hillary Clinton as the Democratic Party’s probable presidential nominee. Today’s round of presidential primaries are taking place in the following states: North Dakota, California, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota. The next round of presidential primaries is scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C. on June 14.

Bill Would Give Private Campus Police More Authority

The University of Detroit Mercy wants its campus safety officers to be able to help Detroit police officers help patrol neighborhoods around the school. University President Antoine Garibaldi said Thursday at the Mackinac Policy Conference that he's been working with Michigan lawmakers on a law that would allow campus police to make arrests on property that is not owned or leased by the university. House Bill 4588 was passed by the state House in May and has been referred to the Senate judiciary committee.

CSUF Model United Nations Team Wins Top Award

Cal State Fullerton’s Model United Nations team received an Outstanding Delegation Award at the 2016 National Model U.N. Conference in New York City. The award is the highest honor given at the annual event. Competing this spring as the delegation from Togo, the Titan team also received accolades for five position papers, as well as a peer award. Cal State Fullerton’s team of 20 students included Kwan’ze Stewart of Ontario, who cited bolstering his negotiation skills among the benefits the political science major gained from the spending a week interacting with students from other counries.

Nurse is first UofL alum to attend Harvard Research Scholar Initiative

Louisville native Amanda Speller will hone her research path at one of the world’s most prestigious universities. Speller, a 2015 B.S.N. graduate from the University of Louisville School of Nursing, has been accepted to Harvard University’s Research Scholar Initiative, a post-baccalaureate program that aims to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in doctoral programs. Through mentored research and training, the program strengthens a scholar’s competitiveness when applying to top graduate schools.

Police say they don't know why a popular teacher allegedly fired a handgun inside his classroom, causing a chaotic lockdown and evacuation of his Georgia high school. But it immediately pierced the national debate over whether educators should be armed. As officers arrested Dalton High School social studies teacher Jesse Randal Davidson, his students spoke their minds on social media.

Program Offers $20 Million In Scholarships To Immigrants [Education News]

In an effort help young immigrants who are living in the country illegally earn a college degree, a New Hampshire university announced Thursday it is teaming up with two organizations to offer $20 million in scholarships. Southern New Hampshire University, with support from The Shapiro Foundation and TheDream.US, said its program would reach 1,000 students over the next five years who are part of DACA.

Police Respond To Shots Fired At Central Michigan University [Education Breaking News]

School officials say police are responding to a report of shots fired at a residence hall at Central Michigan University. The university said Friday morning that the report concerns Campbell Hall on its campus in Mount Pleasant. The university says the suspect is still at large, and police are urging students to take shelter. The city says the male suspect is considered armed and dangerous.

The Latest: Police Ask For Help In Finding Shooting Suspect [Education News]

Police are asking for the public's help as they search for a 19-year-old man suspected of killing two people at Central Michigan University. The shooting occurred in a residence hall Friday morning on the campus in Mount Pleasant. Police say neither victim was a student. Lt. Larry Klaus says police are searching for James Eric Davis Jr. Klaus says surveillance footage shows the young man fled on foot. He's considered armed and dangerous. Anyone who sees him is asked not to confront him, but to call 911.
