CSUF Joins Statewide Effort to Expand College Access for Those Formerly Incarcerated

Cal State Fullerton will join a statewide effort led by San Francisco State University to expand college access for formerly incarcerated individuals. CSUF is among seven California State University campuses – including Bakersfield, Fresno, Pomona, Sacramento, San Bernardino and San Diego – that will establish programs modeled after SF State’s Project Rebound. Established in 1967 by the late John Irwin, the program helps those who have spent time in jail or prison earn college degrees.

Stockton’s Student Outcomes Symposium Shares Best Practices to Improve Services

More than 200 higher education leaders convened to share best practices at the Student Outcomes Symposium, hosted by the William J. Hughes Center for Public Policy at Stockton University on June 15. The symposium explored students’ academic success, workforce preparation and civic participation, and was attended by career counselors, academic advisers, admissions counselors and employers from 32 colleges and universities.

Indiana University to name inaugural Grand Challenges initiative

Indiana University's inaugural Grand Challenges initiative will be announced Monday, June 20, in downtown Indianapolis. The most ambitious research program in the university’s history, IU's Grand Challenges program will invest $300 million in seed funding over the next five years for up to five initiatives that will harness the combined promise of premier IU scientists, scholars and students in close collaboration with business, nonprofit and government leaders.

New SLCC Building at St. Martinville Campus Ready to Open

South Louisiana Community College's new $9.2 million campus in St. Martinville will welcome its first students this fall. The 36,000-square-foot facility off La. Highway 31 replaces a 1960s-era campus that now serves about 100 students. Enrollment is expected to rise, and the new building was designed to allow for easy additions to meet future demand.

Stevens Names Dr. Christophe Pierre as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Stevens Institute of Technology has selected Dr. Christophe Pierre, Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Illinois, to serve in the role of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs effective September 1, 2016. The announcement follows a nationwide search and intensive selection process. In this role, Pierre will serve as an officer of the university and its second highest-ranking administrator.

12 Northern California Schools to Split $50 Million Donation

The Koret Foundation has donated $50 million to split between 12 Northern California colleges and universities for scholarships and to fund improved technology and research. The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1Yttc0J ) that the foundation has not specified where the money should be used and instead asked schools where they needed the most help. Koret President Michael Boskin says the campuses are free to spend the money as needed in hopes of helping underserved populations at each individual institution.

UPDATE: Presidential Primaries

Hillary Clinton won Washington, D.C. in yesterday's presidential primaries and has exceeded the number of delegates needed for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. Clinton now has a combined total of 2,800 pledged delegates and superdelegates. The number needed for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination is 2,383. On the Republican Party’s side, Donald Trump has a total of 1,542 delegates. The number needed for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination is 1,237.

Cal State Fullerton to Further Harness the Sun’s Power

Cal State Fullerton is moving ahead with more solar power to expand the array of solar panels that harness the force of the sun to power lights, computers, air conditioning and other campus equipment. It’s been four years since the university “threw the switch” for a photovoltaic installation on the rooftops of the Clayes Performing Arts Center, the Kinesiology and Health Science Building and the Eastside Parking Structure.

Forbes has chosen Trident University International (Trident) as one of their “10 Great Colleges for Adults Returning to School.” The list, which went live on May 23rd, also includes the likes of Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Data for this list was pulled from College Factual, a higher education information hub. The ten colleges and universities featured are ranked in a number of different ways, including how the needs of adult students are met.

Family Says UNR Football Player Presumed Dead Died a Hero

The parents of a University of Nevada, Reno football player from Honolulu who is presumed to have drowned in Lake Tahoe say their son died trying to save others. Rescue crews called off their search for Marc Ma on Monday, but officials say efforts to recover his body will continue. Ma, 20, had been on a paddle board trip with several football players on Friday when the group encountered strong winds off Lake Tahoe's west shore. Ma's board was found adrift.

Texas Rangers Draft Henry Ford College Baseball Player Kyle Roberts in 5th Round

The Texas Rangers drafted Henry Ford College (HFC) baseball player Kyle Roberts in the 5th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft. A left-handed pitcher for HFC, Roberts was the Rangers’ 159th overall pick. A 2014 alumnus of Allen Park High School, Roberts graduated with his associate degree in Business Administration last month from HFC. He was a member of the Hawks Academic Team for the winter 2016 semester.

LaGuardia Community College Awards Associate’s Degrees to More than 1,500 Graduates at 44th Commencement

More than 1,500 graduates celebrated earning their associate’s degrees at the 44th Commencement of LaGuardia Community College held earlier today. Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, a long-time champion for higher education, gave the keynote address. Queens Borough President Melinda Katz has been a dedicated advocate on behalf of LaGuardia Community College—having allocated $2.75 million to LaGuardia programs including the development of high-quality, customized technology-driven and entrepreneurial training center.

University of New Mexico Installs Car Charging Stations

The University of New Mexico has installed two charging stations on its main campus so student commuters can charge electric vehicles. The school announced last week a charging station was installed at the Cornell Parking Structure and another one of the Yale Parking Structure. Each charging station can connect to two vehicles at a time. Officials say charging stations software will track usage, the number of charges, and the amount of energy used per charge.

UCF Hosting Blood Drives in Wake of Orlando Shooting

The University of Central Florida will be hosting several on-campus blood drives this week following the mass shooting in Orlando. In a statement on the school’s website UFC’s president John C. Hitt said in a statement on the school’s website that encouraged participation at the blood drives and will be visiting the blood drive sites Monday to greet and thank donors along with student body president Chris Clemente, Vice President and Director of Athletics Danny White and UCF coaches and student athletes.

Study finds global legalization trial escalates elephant poaching

Two researchers who examined elephant poaching data and the ivory trade say policymakers who consider legalizing some illicit trade may be relying on a faulty theory that legalization makes black markets collapse. The admonition comes in a paper posted today by the National Bureau of Economic Research, Solomon Hsiang, a University of California, Berkeley, public policy professor and director of the campus’sGlobal Policy Lab, and Nitin Sekar, an ecologist at Princeton University.
