Latin American Collections Now Available in Digital Repository

More than 500,000 books from the stacks of the Benson Latin American Collection, a trove of treasures related to Latin America, have been digitized and are now accessible online. The project is an extension of the University of Texas Libraries partnership with Google to digitize books and other literature to create a massive digital repository. The HathiTrust Digital Library was established in 2008, built upon digital content from research libraries culled from the original Google Books project — in which the UT Libraries were a partner — and theInternet Archive initiative, along with content digitized through partner projects.

Walton Foundation Gives $10M to University of the Ozarks

The University of the Ozarks has received $10 million from the Walton Family Foundation to fund scholarships for students. The gift announced Monday will create an endowment for the Frontier Scholarship Program, which will benefit students from low- and middle-income families. School leaders say the program will ensure that a college education is attainable for students of all income levels.

WVSU Extension Service Hosts Fall Gardening Workshop Series

West Virginia State University (WVSU) Extension Service invites you to “fall” into gardening with an Autumn Ag workshop series, taking place at community garden sites throughout Charleston during the month of October. The series will begin with a session on raised bed and container garden production at the Agsten Manor Community Garden on Friday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m. All sessions in the series are free and open to the public.

Reuters ranks Indiana University 37th on list of a Universit 37th on list of world’s most innovative universities

Once again, Indiana University ranks among the world’s 50 most innovative universities, climbing 12 spots above last year’s performance in a Reuters News analysis of patent and publishing data from more than 600 research institutions worldwide. The latest findings of The Reuters 100: The World’s Most Innovative Universities, released Wednesday, finds IU ranked 37th worldwide and 25th among U.S. universities. Last year’s study placed IU 49th worldwide and 33rd among U.S. universities. Ten of the Top 100, including IU, are part of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, an academic consortium formerly known as the Committee on Institutional Cooperation.

Wayne State U Seeks to Improve Health of Young People with HIV

A team of researchers led by Wayne State University expects to get $15.7 million over five years for work related to the health and well-being of adolescents and young adults with HIV or at risk for HIV infection. The funding for the "Scale it Up" project is from the National Institute of Child and Human Development of the National Institutes of Health.

Higher Education Institution Department Chair Gets $3.7M Military Grant to Develop Computer Tech

A Tulane University professor is getting a $3.7 million, three-year military grant to help develop computing technology. The university announced Tuesday that professor Michael Mislove, chair of Tulane's computer science department, received the grant from the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research. The research grant is aimed at creating new technology related to quantum computing, specifically targeting the development of programming languages for quantum computers.

UMaine-Augusta to Offer Noncredit Course on Operating Drones

The University of Maine at Augusta is set to offer the state's first university-level course in operating unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones. The noncredit class is open to the public, not just UMaine-Augusta students. The school plans to offer a comprehensive series of courses that will prepare students for the FAA examinations required to become a licensed drone pilot.

U of Illinois Plans Vigil after Shootings

The University of Illinois plans a vigil Tuesday to support the victims of two shootings on campus. Four people were injured in the shootings and one man, 22-year-old George Korchev of Mundelein, was killed. Police say the first shooting killed Korchev and injured three people outside a party on campus. None of the four was part of the disagreement or party.

Debate Watch Party Planned at University of Louisville

The University of Louisville is holding a presidential debate watch party for millennials. The school says in a statement the watch party will begin at 8 p.m. Monday at Ekstrom Library's Chao Auditorium on the Belknap Campus. Millennial voters and the general public are invited to attend.

University Adopts Nickname Policy for Students, Workers

A university in Pennsylvania is allowing students and workers to use nicknames on some campus records, including student identification cards and emails, in an effort to better allow them to express their identities. The policy aims to support some international and transgender individuals, among others.

OSU Ecampus named nation’s best value in online education

Oregon State University’s distance education program has been named the nation’s best online college in terms of value by ValueColleges.com, an organization that provides in-depth analysis and rankings on affordability and quality in higher education. The rankings assess online bachelor’s programs based on tuition costs, reputability, and return on investment using data from the website Payscale.com.

Rice's Rebecca Richards-Kortum named MacArthur Fellow

Rice University bioengineer and global-health pioneer Rebecca Richards-Kortum has received a coveted MacArthur Fellowship. Richards-Kortum, the founder and director of Rice's award-winning Rice 360º Institute for Global Health, is the first Houston scientist, the first Houston woman and the first Rice faculty member to win the award.

UMass Officials Say Enrollment Set to Reach Record High

Officials at the University of Massachusetts say enrollment at the school is projected to reach a record high this year of 74,678 students across the school's five campuses in Amherst, Boston, Dartmouth and Lowell and Worcester. The school says student enrollment at UMass has risen almost 27 percent over the past decade.

University of Houston Says Don't Drink Discolored Tap Water

The University of Houston has advised students and staff on the main campus not to drink the discolored tap water as tests are done to determine the problem. City officials providing the water say the supply is safe for consumption, but the school says people on campus should avoid the tap water anyway, as a precaution, until the system can be flushed out.
