What Is The UNH-4U Program?

University Helps Students With Intellectual Disabilities

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The University of New Hampshire has received a grant to fund a program that bolsters the college experience for students with intellectual disabilities.

The Institute on Disability at the University of New Hampshire launched UNH-4U with the goal of helping these students with problem solving, socializing and other challenges. The two-year program combines traditional classroom time with inclusive housing options and academic coaches. The goal is to promote independent living among the students and enhance their social development.

The effort is being funded by a grant from the John Vance ACCESS Fund, a donor-advised program of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation.

UNH estimates that there are more than 35,000 residents with intellectual disabilities living in New Hampshire. These residents are more likely to be underemployed and live in poverty.
