One Language, Many Voices: Examples of Cultural Diversity in the Spanish Language

Although a language fulfills the essential function of communicating and improving understanding between parties, that is not its  only role. Language is a cultural expression that reflects  a way of feeling, thinking, living, and conceiving the world. For this reason, a single language can display as many variations as the settings in which it is used, geographical, social, and contextual—such as formal or informal registers, age, or education level. Because of this complexity, it is challenging to universalize concepts  on the use of language.

House Republicans To Offer 2 Separate Bills On Immigration [Beyond Education]

House Republicans are considering next steps on two immigration bills after GOP leaders persuaded moderate Republicans to drop their renegade effort to force votes on legislation that would have protected young "Dreamer" immigrants with a path to citizenship. Instead, leaders reached a deal with moderates and conservatives that will allow two votes on other bills, starting as soon as next week.

APNewsBreak: US Launches Bid To Find Citizenship Cheaters [Beyond Education]

The U.S. government agency that oversees immigration applications is launching an office that will focus on identifying Americans who are suspected of cheating to get their citizenship and seek to strip them of it. The agency is hiring several dozen lawyers and immigration officers to review cases of immigrants who were ordered deported and are suspected of using fake identities to later get green cards and citizenship through naturalization.

Bourdain's Death Means Loss Of A Voice For Immigrant Workers [Beyond Education]

Anthony Bourdain's culinary passions went far beyond the cuisine he put on a plate. He also was committed to the immigrant workers who toil in his and other kitchens throughout the restaurant industry. Bourdain, who died Friday in France in an apparent suicide at age 61, was an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump's immigration policies and a fierce defender of Hispanic workers.

New Evacuations Near Guatemala Volcano Set Off Panic [Beyond Education]

Frightened people living near the Volcano of Fire fled with their children and few possessions when fresh flows of super-heated debris were announced, taking no chances after authorities gave them little time to evacuate before a deadly eruption over the weekend. Traffic came to a standstill on choked roads Tuesday and those without vehicles walked, even in central Escuintla, which was not under an evacuation order.
