School Library July 2018

Each month, we usually focus on the works of an author, and while the importance of writers to the world of literature cannot be overstated, we wanted to change our focus for this School Library and look at the contributions of illustrator Enrique O. Sanchez. A native of the Dominican Republic, Sanchez is primarily a fine artist that has created the illustrations for more than 13 children’s books including for such award-winning titles as “Abuela’s Weave,” “Amelia’s Road” and “Confetti.” Sanchez’s work is featured on Lee & Low Books’ website along with teachers’ guides (featured below) and other classroom materials.

Studies have found an estimated 8 million to 9 million Americans — the majority of them children — live with at least one relative who is in the country illegally, and so each action to deport an immigrant is just as likely to entangle a citizen or legal U.S. resident.

More Than 300 Older Children Split At Border Are Reunited [Beyond Education]

The Trump administration said Thursday that it has reunified 364 children ages 5 and older with their families after they were separated at the border, still leaving hundreds to go before a court-imposed deadline a week away. The Justice Department reaffirmed in a court filing that it has identified 2,551 children who may be covered by U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw's order.

US Deporting Crime Victims While They Wait For Special Visa [Beyond Education]

For victims of crime on U.S. soil who are living here illegally, a special visa program provides their only clear path to citizenship. But as Republican President Donald Trump's administration has taken a harder line on immigration, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement appears to be stepping up the detention and deportation of people who have applied for the so-called "U visa."

Judge Temporarily Halts Deportation Of Reunified Families [Beyond Education]

A federal judge on Monday ordered a temporary halt to any deportations of reunited families who were separated by the Trump administration after crossing the southwest border. The American Civil Liberties Union had asked Judge Dana Sabraw to delay deportations a week after reunification.

NY Sends 3rd Set Of Volunteers To Aid Puerto Rico Rebuilding [On A Positive Note In Education]

A third set of 100 New York college students and construction workers is headed to Puerto Rico to help rebuilding after Hurricane Maria's heavy blow to the island last year. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the volunteer deployment Sunday. It's the third since the start of June.

Pompeo Travels To Mexico To Meet New Leftist President-Elect [Beyond Education]

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will lead a Cabinet-level delegation to Mexico on Friday on the heels of a sea-change election there that could offer a chance for the neighbors to repair strained relations — or make them worse. U.S.-Mexico ties have deteriorated significantly under President Donald Trump, who campaigned on building a border wall and who has repeatedly blamed Mexico for economic and social problems in the United States.

Detaining Immigrant Kids Is Now A Billion-Dollar Industry [Beyond Education]

Detaining immigrant children has morphed into a surging industry in the U.S. that now reaps $1 billion annually — a tenfold increase over the past decade, an Associated Press analysis finds. Health and Human Services grants for shelters, foster care and other child welfare services for detained unaccompanied and separated children soared from $74.5 million in 2007 to $958 million in 2017.

Chartered flights full of deportees from the United States regularly arrive in the Central American country, but Tuesday's flight was among the first containing families separated at the border under President Donald Trump's contentious zero-tolerance policy. More than 2,300 children were separated from their families before a June 20 order stopping the practice.

Protesters Targeting Northeastern U Over $2.7M ICE Contract [Education News]

Northeastern University students and community activists are demanding the school cancel a multimillion-dollar research contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Federal spending data show that Northeastern has received $2.7 million from ICE over the last two years. Northeastern says the grant isn't funding research that has anything to do with immigration enforcement.
