Update: University Board OK's Purchase Of Former Casino Near Campus

Stockton University's board of trustees has given approval for the purchase of a former casino site near a campus slated to open next month in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The university says the purchase agreement with Clearwater, Florida-based TJM Properties involves 11 upland lots totaling 9 acres (3.6 hectares), a beach lot that's 11 acres (4.5 hectares), a nine-level parking garage and a 23-story hotel tower.

Colorado College Reprinting Up To 9.2K Diplomas To Fix Typo

A Colorado university is offering to reprint up to 9,200 diplomas after the outgoing editor of the school newspaper found a big typo. Alec Williams was checking to make sure his name was spelled correctly on his Colorado Mesa University diploma when he noticed it said "Coard of Trustees" instead of "Board of Trustees" in Old English font.

Stockton University To Consider Buying Former Casino [Education News]

Stockton University is eyeing a purchase of a now-shuttered casino in New Jersey. The Press of Atlantic City reports the university's board of trustees is meeting Wednesday to discuss buying the closed Atlantic Club Casino Hotel. The Atlantic Club is located near the university's Atlantic City campus, which is set to open this month.

On Monday, twin fires being treated as one incident north of San Francisco became the largest wildfire in state history, destroying 443 square miles (1,148 square kilometers) — nearly the size of the city of Los Angeles.

University Of Utah Latest To Cut Ties With Papa John's [Education News]

The University of Utah says it has closed the Papa John's in the campus food court as it joins a long list of institutions cutting ties with the pizza company after the founder used a racial slur. The university said Wednesday in a statement that the racial slur used by Papa John's founder John Schnatter's is in "direct opposition to our values."

State Standardizes Policy On Advanced Placement Exams [Education News]

New Mexico Higher Education Department announced plan to standardize credits for first-year college students who pass high school Advanced Placement exams. Under the new guidelines, high school students who earn passing grades in the courses and pass their course exam when the school year ends will get college credit when they enroll at a public college or university in the state.

DCCCD Students Can Now Earn International Honors Certificate At Tuition Rate [Education News]

Students can now earn an International Honors Certificate at the seven Dallas Community Colleges. If students have completed at least 12 credit hours from one of the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) schools, they can obtain the certificate at the DCCCD tuition rate. Enrollment is open through August 22.

Providence, RWU Partner On English Teaching Program [Education News]

Rhode Island is expediting a program to certify more Providence educators to teach English as a second language. The program is a partnership between the Providence school district and Roger Williams University. One out of every three students in the city school system is learning English and yet only a third of the district's 2,000 teachers are specially trained to instruct these students.
