Motel 6: $7.6 Million For Guests Reported To Immigration

Motel 6 has agreed to pay Latino guests who were reported to immigration by the company’s employees up to $7.6 million. According to the guests and the proposed settlement that was filed in federal court, the company’s employees shared the guests’ private information with immigration officials.

41 Latinos In Congress, 2 Races Still Undecided

Although two races remain undecided, the number of Latinos who will be serving in Congress in 2019 will be rising to at least 41. There were 44 Latino Democratic candidates who ran in the midterm elections, and 33 of those 44 won. There were also 15 Latino Republican candidates who ran, and of those six won.

CSUSM To Increase Number Of Latino And Latina Teachers

California State University San Marcos has received a $2.7 million grant to increase the number of Latino and Latina teachers. Teachers across the nation do not measure up to the demographics of the students they are teaching including San Diego County. Hispanic students in particular make up 48 percent and only 20 percent reported their race or ethnicity according last year’s state data.

Caravan Treated To Screening Of “Coco”

The caravan of immigrant asylum seekers traveling through Mexico was treated last week to an outdoor screening of “Coco” when the caravan stopped at an unfinished bus terminal-turned-shelter in the state of Oaxaca. Thanks to solar power, the goodwill of the townspeople and resources from the local government the migrant travelers found a safe place to sleep, eat and enjoy Pixar’s “Coco."

College Student Works To Bring Others To The Polls

University of Connecticut-Stamford student Michael Hernandez is a few months away from getting his green card and so is not eligible to vote in tomorrow’s midterms. Instead, the 19-year-old is trying to encourage people to vote, including through a web series of sorts on his Facebook page.

Longoria, Ferrera, Saldana And More Rally For Latino Votes

Actresses Eva Longoria, America Ferrera, Rosario Dawson, Gina Rodriguez and Zoe Saldana visited Little Havana on Sunday to encourage people to vote in tomorrow’s midterm elections. "This cause of getting people out to vote is one of the most important things we can do as citizens," Longoria told the Associated Press.

ACLU Sues Dodge City Over Voting Access For Hispanics

The ACLU is suing Dodge City in Kansas for moving the only polling site in the city to outside the city limits. According to the lawsuit, this will make it more difficult for the majority of the city’s Hispanic population to vote because of issues with work schedule flexibility and access to transportation.

“Orange Is The New Black” Star Speaks At WPU

Selenis Leyva, best known for role on "Orange is the New Black," visited William Paterson University in New Jersey for the opening of William Paterson University’s 2018 LatinX Heritage Celebration. Her talk was entitled, “Untold Stories: A New Beginning in Promoting Intercultural Competence, Social Change, and Inclusion.”

Report: Agencies Blindsided By Trump Immigration Order

A report by the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office has found that federal immigration and health officials were blindsided by President Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy regarding migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. This has triggered a cascade of problems as the agencies struggle with the fallout from the separation of families at the border.

Willa Weakens To Tropical Depression, Still Brings Rain

Hurricane Willa, which recently slammed into Mexico’s Pacific coast and hit farms, beach towns and fishing villages as a Category 3 storm, has weakened to a tropical depression. Despite weakening, Willa continues to dump torrential rains specifically over west-central Mexico.

Eligible Hispanics Voting In Midterms Reach Record High

Eligible Hispanics voting in November’s midterm elections have reached a record high of more than 29 million. Making them 12.8 percent of all eligible voters. Hispanics have set new records in both the number of people and the percentage. This is a critical time as the Democrats are vying to gain control of one or more chambers of Congress.

More Than 60 Higher Education Leaders Endorse Seal of Excelencia

More than 60 leaders of higher education and Latino advocacy organizations have endorsed The Seal of Excelencia, a major national initiative announced by Excelencia in Education aimed at significantly increasing the number of Latino students attaining college degrees by 2030.
