29th Annual Ezra Jack Keats Mini-grant Program Call for Proposals

The Foundation, which fosters children’s love of reading and creative expression in our diverse culture, celebrates the 29th year of its Mini-grant program with a call for proposals.  Approximately 60 grants of up to $500 each will be awarded to qualifying teachers and librarians at public schools and libraries across the country. The deadline for submissions is March 31, 2017, and decisions will be emailed to all applicants in early May, allowing educators to plan for the next academic year.

Indiana Undergrads Researching Diseases with Cuban School

Indiana undergraduate students are partnering with the University of Havana on a program researching treatments for neglected diseases. Such diseases are those that have little or no financial incentive to research because they affect small or poverty-stricken populations. Students and researchers with Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis recently traveled to Cuba to begin a partnership with the University of Havana on the topic.

Queen’s researchers recognised for their positive impact on society

Four world-class researchers at Queen’s University have been recognised for the positive impact of their work at the Vice-Chancellor’s Research Prizes 2016. In total, twelve academics were shortlisted across four categories: Research Impact, Research Innovation, Post-Doctoral Research and Early Career Researcher.

Utah Valley University Celebrates 75th Anniversary with Unveiling of 200-foot-long Stained Glass Wall of Windows - Roots of Knowledge

Marking the culmination of its 75th anniversary, Utah Valley University (UVU) will unveil for the first time Friday a massive stained glass window project now 12 years in the making called "Roots of Knowledge." The 10-foot high, 200-foot wide 80-pane panorama pays tribute to the finest human achievements in art, architecture, music, law, literature, philosophy, medicine, science and technology. The Roots of Knowledge unveiling bookends a year-long celebration for UVU as its 75th anniversary year draws to an end. Home to more than 35,000 students, UVU began as a vocational school during World War II, and in the seven decades since has evolved into a technical school, community college, state college and, finally, a comprehensive regional teaching university.

FAU National Poll Shows Hispanics are More Cautious about Holiday Spending and the Economy

Hispanics are more cautious about their holiday spending this year with 1 in 5 saying they will not be shopping at all, according to a national survey by the Florida Atlantic University Business and Economics Polling Initiative (FAU BEPI). The number of respondents who said they would not shop in 2016 has increased by 10 points since the 2015 survey, from 11 percent to 21 percent. Others plan to delay holiday shopping. Earlier shopping has declined, with 18 percent of Hispanics saying they already started to shop, compared with 20 percent in 2015 and 24 percent in 2014.  Hispanics will rely more on debt this year, with 29 percent using credit cards to pay for their purchases compared to 25 percent in 2015.
