UCI Is First to Conduct Formal Study of Virtual Inclusion for Homebound Students

Chronically ill, homebound children who use robotic surrogates to “attend” school feel more socially connected with their peers and more involved academically, according to a first-of-its-kind study by University of California, Irvine education researchers. From home, a student controlling the device can see and hear everything in the classroom.

Seton Hall Rises Again in U.S. News & World Report's Rankings of Top National Universities

U.S. News & World Report's 2017 America's Best Colleges guide has ranked Seton Hall University among the top tier of national universities, and to its list of “A Plus Schools for B Students.” For 2017, Seton Hall's ranking rose for the sixth consecutive year to 118th among the nation's four-year public, private and for-profit national universities.

Spanish architect Carme Pinós awarded 2016 Rupp Prize

Carme Pinós, an award-winning architect and educator, is the 2016 recipient of the Berkeley-Rupp Architecture Professorship and Prize. Carme Pinós is known for designs ranging from cultural centers, educational institutions and public housing to office towers, urban landscapes and furniture design. Pinós leads the architectural firm Estudio Carme Pinós in Barcelona, Spain.

College Dorm Dedicated to Ice Bucket Challenge Co-founder

Endicott College officially dedicated Peter Frates Hall after the man who co-founded the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge during a ceremony held Tuesday on the school's campus in Beverly. Frates, a former Boston College baseball team captain, was diagnosed with amytrophic lateral sclerosis in 2012 at the age of 27. and has been busy raising awareness of the disease through the Ice Bucket Challenge.

Americans’ knowledge of the branches of government is declining

Only a quarter of Americans can name all three branches of government, the poorest showing on that question in a half-dozen years, a new survey conducted by the Annenberg Public Policy Center (APPC) of the University of Pennsylvania has found. The survey also shows that nearly a third of Americans cannot name any of the three branches of government.

Cal State Fullerton Now Among Top ‘National Universities’

U.S. News & World Report, lists Cal State Fullerton as a top “national university” in rakings released today. This change was based largely on the university’s recent elevation to an “R-3” (research) status by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, in recognition of Cal State Fullerton’s evolution from a master’s-level comprehensive institution to one that awards doctorates.

Purdue University Reports Main Campus Enrollment Record

Purdue University says it has set an enrollment record with more than 40,000 students at its main campus in West Lafayette. Purdue officials say 40,451 students arrived on campus, up 1,042 from last year. The school says this year's freshman class is larger than projected because more students took up Purdue's acceptance offers than anticipated.

Indiana University Research and Technology Corp. issued record 53 U.S. patents in 2015-16

The United States Patent and Trademark Office issued a record 53 patents in the 2015-16 fiscal year to the Indiana University Research and Technology Corp., which protects, markets and licenses intellectual property developed at Indiana University so it can be commercialized by industry. The 53 issued U.S. patents in 2015-16 represent a 29 percent increase over the previous year's 41.

Kean University Students Create the Ultimate Dorm Room with Some Help from IKEA

Starting in September, Kean University’s Green Lane Academic building will house a model dorm room in one of its gallery spaces. Designed by Kean architecture and design students, utilizing IKEA products and styling, the space is designed to inspire and promote sustainable solutions for small space living.

UConn Plans New Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling

The University of Connecticut is planning a new graduate program designed to prepare students to become genetic counselors who interpret the results of a genetic test and advise patients about potential health risks and ways to mitigate those risks.The program is being funded by a grant of more than $300,000 from the University.

UT Austin Researchers Receive $20 Million to Improve Education Outcomes for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People

Researchers in the College of Education at The University of Texas at Austin have received a $20 million, five-year award from the U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs to lead a center that will have a far-reaching effect: supporting postsecondary education outcomes for deaf and hard of hearing people.

DCCCD students are first community college interns to win award from Los Alamos National Laboratories

Mountain View College students Emmanuel Ayorinde and JaMein Mason won an “Award of Recognition” for their work during a summer internship at Los Alamos National Laboratory. They were the first community college students to receive the honor in LANL’s history. The two students worked on a drone that uses a hammer to tap bridges to test their structural quality.
