Hispanic Community October 2024 Riverland Community College: A Beacon of Opportunity and Growth in Southeastern Minnesota Riverland Community College, founded in 1996, plays a vital role in southeastern Minnesota’s workforce development and education. Technology April 2018 PREMIUM NYU Professor Launches Mobile App to Promote Bilingualism in Hispanic Children NYU Steinhardt Assistant Professor of Applied Psychology Dr. Natalie Brito launched, Háblame Bebé, a free educational mobile application for iOS and Android operating systems, which provides Spanish-speaking parents with the tools to engage with their infants and toddlers in both English and Spanish with the goal of developing early bilingual learners and reducing the ‘word gap’ in low-income Hispanic children.
Hispanic Community April 2018 PREMIUM Improving Spanish-speaking Teachers Texas Woman’s University Introduces a Bilingual Program A federal grant at Texas Woman’s University (TWU) is helping bilingual and in-service teachers become better educators by improving their bilingual skills. The program, which launched in 2016, is called PIONERAS, the Spanish word for “pioneer.” In 2017, 24 graduate students and 42 undergraduates who are all bilingual and in-service teachers participated in it. by Gary M. Administration April 2018 PREMIUM Hispanic-serving Institutions According to the U.S. Department of Education, “a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) is defined as an institution of higher education that—(A) is an eligible institution; and (B) has an enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students that is at least 25 percent Hispanic students at the end of the award year immediately preceding the date of application.” While this definition nicely sums up the requirements a school must meet to become an HSI, being an HSI and truly serving the Hispanic community goes beyond statistics. And so we here at Hispanic Outlook are running an ongoing article series highlighting those schools that have achieved HSI status and how they are truly Hispanic-Serving Institutions.

Financing April 2018 No Tuition Increase At California State University Next Year [Education News] California State University will not raise tuition at its 23 campuses for the 2018-19 academic year as officials had proposed, Chancellor Timothy White said. White said the country's largest university system is dropping a proposal for trustees to consider raising tuition that was to be discussed at a May meeting.
