In order to spend a year in Florence as part of the CSU International Program, Cal State Fullerton art major Claudia Itzel Márquez held bake sales, raffles and yard sales. She received donations from friends. She sold jewelry that she and her partner made by hand. And she received four scholarships that helped pay for her housing expenses.

Union Institute and University Awarded Grant to Assist Vets

Union Institute and University in Cincinnati has been awarded a $150,000 grant from an anonymous foundation that aims to help veterans earn their college degrees. The grant will continue to fund living allowance stipends for honorably discharged, Pell Grant-eligible veterans working toward their bachelor's, master's or doctoral degrees at the school. Geri Maples, Union's veterans services coordinator, says education is vital to veterans' transition into the civilian world.

American Geophysical Union honors Virginia Tech's Esteban Gazel with 2016 Hisashi Kuno Award

The Kuno Award was announced in conjunction with several other honors by the American Geophysical Union. The Kuno award is based on the excellence in research arising from work performed up to seven years past recipient’s earning of his or her doctoral degree. The award is named in honor of Hisashi Kuno, a mid-20th century volcanologist, petrologist and field geologist who revolutionized volcanology.

The Opelika-Auburn News (http://bit.ly/29Df9Az ) reports the decision was announced Thursday on conference calls for workers at Southern Union State Community College, Chattahoochee Valley Community College and Central Alabama Community College.
