Helena Bonham Carter’s Courageous Hispanic Grandfather
Few Hollywood actors or actresses have taken on the variety of daring and usual roles that fill the filmography of Helena Bonham Carter. From the Harry Potter villain Bellatrix Lestrange to the Red Queen in Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” to Mrs. Lovett in “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (where she played opposite Johnny Depp) Bonham Carter has not been afraid to tackle challenging parts throughout her career.
Courage, however, runs in Bonham Carter’s family.
Although born in London with a family tree that includes barons and baronesses, Bonham Carter’s maternal grandfather was Eduardo Propper de Callejón. A Spanish diplomat stationed in France during World War II, he helped Jewish and non-Jewish refugees by issuing transit visas, so they could escape the Nazis. Although he was the diplomat and so able to issue such visas, he was technically defying protocols by doing so without prior approval from the Foreign Ministry. There is speculation that this might have negatively impacted his career.
Nevertheless, because of his actions he was recognized by Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, with the honorific Righteous Among the Nations.
