Bennington College gets $90k to study PFOA chemical

BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) — A Vermont college has been awarded a nearly $90,000 grant to offer a new course and research chemical acid contamination.

Vermont Public Radio reports (http://bit.ly/1LTIY1E ) that Bennington College won the National Science Foundation Rapid Response grant. University officials say the college plans to offer a class on the water situation in Hoosick Falls, about 10 miles from Bennington.

The state is testing nearly 150 wells in the region to see how far the contamination spread after the potentially cancer-causing chemical PFOA was detected in the water.

The chemical was used to help make non-stick surfaces. Vermont officials have said the chemical was found at an industrial plant in Hoosick Falls.
