Colleges ask legislature to help fund security program

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida colleges are asking the state legislature to help fund a program to increase campus security.

The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/1MjNoYO ) reports the Council of Presidents voted Thursday to ask the legislature to fund the $74 million, three-year program.

The proposal asks for $37 million, or 50 percent of the total, for the 2016-17 school year. The school would then receive $18.5 million for each of the following two years. The funds would pay for training, resources and equipment at 28 colleges.

Executive director of the Association of Florida Colleges Michael Brawer says colleges need to offer alternatives to bringing guns on campus in order to address campus security.

Five of the 28 state campuses currently have police or armed security.
