“TIDES OF REVOLUTION: INFORMATION, INSURGENCIES, AND THE CRISIS OF COLONIAL RULE IN VENEZUELA”

by Cristina Soriano

Publisher: University of New Mexico Press

ISBN-13: 978-0826359865

In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Spanish colonial governments tried to keep revolution out of their provinces. But hand-copied samizdat materials from the Caribbean flooded the cities and ports of Venezuela, hundreds of foreigners shared news of the French and Haitian revolutions with locals, and Venezuelans of diverse social backgrounds met to read hard-to-come-by texts and to discuss the ideas they expounded. As a result these networks efficiently spread antimonarchical propaganda and abolitionist and egalitarian ideas (and without using printing presses), allowing Venezuelans to participate in an incipient yet vibrant public sphere and to contemplate new political scenarios.

“MASQUERADE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE IN CONTEMPORARY LATIN AMERICAN FICTION”

by Helene Carol Weldt-Basson

Publisher: University of New Mexico Press

ISBN-13: 978-0826358158

Contemporary Latin American fiction establishes a unique connection between masquerade and social justice. Using an interdisciplinary approach that combines philosophy, history, psychology, literature, and social justice theory, this study delineates the synergistic connection between these two themes. Weldt-Basson examines fourteen novels by twelve different Latin American authors and elucidates the varieties of social justice operating in the plots of contemporary Latin American novels: distributive, postmodern/feminist, postcolonial, transitional, and historical justices. She further examines how masquerade and disguise aid in articulating the theme of social justice, why this is important, and how it relates to Latin American history and the historical novel.

“MAYAN LITERACY REINVENTION IN GUATEMALA”

by Mary J. Holbrock

Publisher: University of New Mexico Press

ISBN-13: 978-0826357236

The Mayan writing system is one of the oldest in the world; its reinvention includes a new standardized alphabetic system for each of the 22 Mayan languages spoken in Guatemala, as well as the incorporation and continuation of some of its ancient elements. This book represents a case study conducted in two Mayan villages, and it investigates three main aspects of Mayan literacy: its availability in publications and media, its practice in the school system and its use among Maya people. The promises and pitfalls of a literacy-revitalization endeavor are detailed and our understanding of the concept of literacy is reexamined.

“OF LOVE AND OTHER PASSIONS: ELITES, POLITICS, AND FAMILY IN BOGOTÁ, COLOMBIA, 1778–1870”

by Guiomar Dueñas-Vargas

Publisher: University of New Mexico Press

ISBN-13: 978-0826355850

This book delves into the world of emotions among the bourgeois elite in Bogotá from the end of the colonial period to 1870. While most studies of the period focus solely on the country’s political activity, Guiomar Dueñas-Vargas shows how social, cultural and political changes transformed the meaning of love, which contributed to the evolution of new models of femininity and masculinity. By examining personal letters, diaries and other sources, he presents emotional profiles of families and couples, demonstrating how their conduct challenged the established order. As lovers insisted on choosing their own mates, they undermined the patriarchal structure of Colombian society.
