Three University of Florida area studies centers have received $5.9 million in major grants.
The U.S. Department of Education Title VI Program has named UF’s African, European and Latin American studies centers Title VI Comprehensive National Resource Centers (NRC) and has awarded them Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship grants. These centers support international research, public programming and training initiatives with collaboration from faculty across campus and experts across the world. Additionally, they provide student fellowships over a four-year period (2018-2022).
UF was awarded the Title VI grants to recognize their contributions to their focus on building world regional expertise in preparing students for international careers in government and the private sector. The grants are internationalizing K-12 education to extend the centers impact across southeast U.S. community colleges and minority-serving institutions in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama.
For example, the Center for Latin American Studies (LAS) was founded in 1931 and has been continuously funded by Title VI since 1962 to offer an advance scope of knowledge and quality research, teaching and outreach in Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies at UF.
