School’s Food Rescue Program

Students Sent Home With Food For Weekends

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) — A northern Indiana school is sending leftover food home with some students to help feed them on the weekends.

Woodland Elementary School in Elkhart has teamed up with South Bend-based food rescue nonprofit Cultivate to send eight individual frozen meals home with 20 students every Friday until the end of the school year.

Cultivate's Jim Conklin tells WSBT-TV it takes well-prepared food, combines it with other food and makes individual frozen meals out if it.

Natalie Bickel of Elkhart Community Schools says there wasn't anything to do with leftover food so Cultivate comes to the school three times a week and rescues the food for students who might otherwise go hungry.

It's a pilot program for now.
