Reaching the highest levels of educational achievement is a feat that requires motivation, commitment, hard work and strong support structures.
Although the pandemic has been a setback for many graduate students – particularly those belonging to minority groups – they are nonetheless persisting in their efforts to enhance their skills, becoming specialists and experts in their fields through Master’s and Doctoral programs.
The latest data indicates that, in the 2019-2020 academic year, the top twenty-five higher education institutions for Hispanics in graduate education across the country (defined as such due to having the highest number of Hispanic/Latino graduate enrollments) enrolled a total of 85,357 Hispanic/Latino students. The top three of these institutions – Grand Canyon University, Florida International University and Nova Southeastern University - enrolled more than 5,000 graduate Hispanic/Latino students each.
Florida International University conferred the highest number of graduate degrees to Hispanic/Latino students (more than 2,000), followed by Grand Canyon University and the University of Southern California (with more than 1,500 each). Each one of the top twenty-five institutions on this list conferred more than 500 graduate degrees to Hispanic/Latino students, thus opening doors for their career advancement.
Among these top twenty-five institutions, three had a large proportion of Hispanic/Latino students among their graduate student body (more than half): The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (76%), the University of Texas at El Paso (62%) and California State University Los Angeles (50%). Another six institutions had Hispanic/Latino students comprising more than a quarter of their student body. These same institutions naturally conferred a large proportion of their graduate degrees to Hispanic/Latino students. •
