Kean Students Win a Silent Disco Party in the TIDAL Social Wave for Change

Union, N.J. —  Kean University students demonstrated their commitment to community service in the recent TIDAL Social Wave for Change contest, taking second place in the national social media competition and winning a silent disco party from TIDAL.  In the contest, students at over 50 universities across the country posted photos and videos of their volunteer work to TIDAL’s social media platforms or on their own accounts followed by the hashtag #TidalXChange.

Kean students quickly rose to the top of the list, posting over 200 photos to Instagram alone, as well as many additional posts to other social media platforms, displaying volunteer work with captions such as - “We just packaged close to 500 meals for families in need! #CommunityFoodbank”

Determined Kean volunteers gave their time and talent to a variety of causes, including raising awareness of women’s heart disease, making Valentine’s Day cards for patients at Children’s Specialized Hospital in Roselle Park, and raising over $3,000 for the Special Olympics by participating in the 2016 Polar Bear Plunge in Seaside Heights.

“Kean students have had a long standing commitment to giving back to their community,” said Scott K. Snowden, director of the Center for Leadership and Service. “This national recognition from TIDAL is a great reward to our students for all of their efforts to improve the lives of the people in the community around them.”

Kean University has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the U.S. Corporation for National and Community Service in Washington D.C. every year since 2009.  In addition, the Kean community performed over 52,600 community service hours during the 2014-2015 academic year with the involvement of over 8,500 students.

"I saw how much community service Kean students do and thought we should get some recognition for it,” said Michael Canova, public relations major and a member of Kean’s Public Relations Student Society of America chapter who spearheaded the TIDAL Social Wave for Change campaign.  “I give credit to the PRSSA for helping to spread the details of the contest around the school. I also give a lot of credit to the Center for Leadership and Service for organizing such a great MLK Week of Service and Kean University volunteers, as the entire campus came together to become a finalist in the contest."

The details for the silent disco party are being worked out.  The Center for Leadership and Service will have a further announcement in the upcoming weeks.
