BRUNSWICK, Maine (AP) — Maine's Bowdoin College says it's going to open classrooms to a small number of students whose education has been disrupted in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Bowdoin College invited students to enroll in the spring semester, and will cover their tuition, room and board, books, winter clothing costs, and transportation to campus.

A spokesman said a "handful" of students will be accepted because of limited classroom capacity.

Bowdoin is part of a small group of colleges and universities across the United States that have set up visiting semester programs after Hurricanes Irma and Maria caused heavy damage in the Caribbean. The deadline for students to apply is Monday, Dec. 18, 2017.
