SAN JOSÉ, Calif. (AP) — Nearly two dozen San José students slept outside on their university campus as part of an annual event meant to bring awareness to Silicon Valley's homeless population.
NBC Bay Area (KNTV-TV) reports that (http://bit.ly/1LdIZ9l ) students spent the night in tents Thursday at San José State University as part of the school's 10th annual "Poverty Under the Stars" event.
Organizers say they hope to raise awareness about the estimated 6,600 people waking up on the streets of Santa Clara County while their affluent neighbors go to work at Google, Apple, Facebook and other tech giants.
Rochelle Jackson-Smarr says she became involved with the event after noticing peers and fcult simply walking past homeless people on campus.
She says the sleep-out dramatizes the fact that money is flowing through Silicon Valley without helping those most in need.
