MERIDEN, Conn. (AP) — All public school students in a Connecticut city will receive free breakfast and lunch starting in the fall.
The Meriden Board of Education has voted to accept additional funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Community Eligibility Provision program in order to provide free meals at the city's 12 public schools.
Director of Food and Nutrition Services Susan Maffe told The Record-Journal Thursday the school district received the grant because of the city's "high need."
Maffe says 70 percent of students already quality for free or reduced price meals.
She says by making meals free to all students, it reduces the stigma associated with applying for a free meal.
