SUNY On Pace To Meet 2020 Clean Energy Goal

Changes Helped Save SUNY $19M Over Last 10 Years

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The State University of New York system is on pace to meet clean energy targets Gov. Andrew Cuomo has set for 2020.

Chancellor Kristina Johnson said Monday that together, SUNY's 64 campuses have reduced their energy use by 18% since 2011. That puts the state's public university system on track to meet next year's 20% reduction goal, which Cuomo set for all state-owned buildings in 2012.

Higher education officials say greater energy efficiency helped reduce energy needs even as many SUNY campuses added new campus buildings.

The changes also helped save SUNY $19 million in energy costs over the last 10 years.

In January, Cuomo set a new goal for the state to derive 100 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2040, the nation's most aggressive clean energy goal.
