SUNY Ulster will assist women in Ulster County who are living in poverty obtain an education, skills and the professional network needed to gain employment. Thanks to a $1.5 million grant from the NoVo Foundation the program New Start for Women will launch in fall 2019. Through the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc., and long-time SUNY Ulster supporter, Darlene L. Pfeiffer, the NoVo grant will be dispensed with $500,000 installments over three years.
The U.S. Census Bureau reports over 12,000 women in Ulster County are living in poverty mostly in age groups 25-34 and 45-54. New Start endeavors to change this by providing an education, support and services that will lead to employment within the community.
This new program furthers SUNY Ulster’s commitment to encourage and enhance the education and career paths of adult students with their Continuing & Professional Education and AdultEDge programs. The purpose of New Start is help the women in the community who don’t have access or are unable to take advantage of educational opportunities because of economic circumstances, overwhelming barriers or life challenges.
Students of the New Start program enroll in one of three SUNY Ulster certificate programs General Management, Administrative Office Skills, or Entrepreneurship. The program provides education, tuition, fees, academic and personal support, career support and mentorship, and community-building to help students achieve their goals.
